ArtVoice Gallery: Platform for Malaysian voices in contemporary art
Connecting cultures, nurturing and taking local artists onto the international stage

NESTLED within a restored heritage shophouse in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, ArtVoice Gallery has quickly established itself as an important space in Malaysia’s contemporary art landscape. Started in 2018 and led by artist-curator Stephen Menon, the gallery is driven by a clear vision: to nurture local artistic talent while presenting authentic Malaysian stories through contemporary visual expression.
Unlike commercial galleries that often prioritise established names, ArtVoice places emerging and mid-career artists at the centre of its mission. It provides them with a professional platform to exhibit their work, experiment with new ideas and engage directly with collectors, critics and the wider public. In doing so, the gallery has become a creative incubator where fresh perspectives are encouraged and celebrated.
For Stephen, art is more than an aesthetic pursuit—it is a powerful form of storytelling. His curatorial approach seeks works that explore Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage, social realities and shared histories. Whether inspired by traditional folklore, urban transformation, indigenous traditions or everyday community life, the exhibitions encourage visitors to reflect on the country’s evolving identity.
The gallery’s “A Conversation” series exemplifies this philosophy by inviting artists to share not only finished works but also the personal journeys, influences and ideas behind their creative practice. Through these exhibitions, audiences gain a deeper appreciation of the dialogue between tradition and innovation, heritage and modernity.

ArtVoice also plays an active role in the community by collaborating with local artists, cultural practitioners, and independent creatives. These partnerships foster meaningful conversations across generations and artistic disciplines, helping to strengthen Malaysia’s creative ecosystem. The gallery regularly hosts exhibitions that highlight overlooked histories and cultural narratives, demonstrating how contemporary art can preserve memory while inspiring new interpretations.
Building bridges across borders
Stephen Menon’s ambitions have never been confined by geography. While he has established himself as one of Malaysia’s respected artists, curators and mentors, he believes Malaysian artists should be part of a much larger regional and international conversation.

Through the ArtVoice Community (AVC), he has quietly built an expanding network of collaborations that provides artists with opportunities to exhibit, exchange ideas and experience different artistic cultures. Rather than waiting for international recognition, Stephen has taken Malaysian art overseas.
“Our artists need international exposure,” he says. “It benefits them in many ways. The different art scenes, local cultures, interactions with foreign artists, and even the relative freedoms or restrictions artists experience elsewhere broaden their perspectives. These experiences help both the artist and the artwork evolve.”
That philosophy has translated into a growing series of international exhibitions.
In 2023, ArtVoice organised The Emperor’s New Clothes, a Malaysia-Pakistan exhibition at Numaish Gah in Lahore. The exhibition introduced Malaysian contemporary artists to Pakistani audiences while creating dialogue between two artistic communities with distinct cultural traditions but shared creative aspirations.

The following years saw the momentum continued. In Bali, ArtVoice partnered with the renowned TonyRaka Art Gallery in Ubud for Mastry, bringing together 16 Malaysian and nine Indonesian artists. More than a conventional group exhibition, it encouraged cross-cultural conversations between neighbouring countries whose artistic heritage is rich yet remarkably different.
ArtVoice’s international footprint expanded further with its participation in Beyond the Frame, an important Southeast Asian exhibition held at The Treasury Museum in Khon Kaen, Thailand, in 2025. The exhibition brought together artists from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, reflecting Stephen’s commitment to positioning Malaysian artists within the broader ASEAN contemporary art landscape.

The collaborations have not been limited to physical exhibitions. In partnership with Lahore’s O Art Space, ArtVoice, via Stephen Menon, also curated Lanna, the third solo exhibition by Lim Siang Jin. Launched online in May, 2025, with a comprehensive 134-page catalogue, the exhibition unfolded via 20 instalments over 20 days on the internet and social media. It combined photography, storytelling and critical commentary into an innovative digital exhibition experience.
Lanna highlighted another aspect of Stephen’s mentorship. Having curated Siang Jin’s earlier show on Our Legacy: Landmark Memories of Penang Free School, Stephen helped him transition from black-and-white to colour photography, recognising that the artist’s sensitivity to colour, composition and atmosphere in his paintings could also flourish in a new medium. The exhibition demonstrated how mentorship can become a catalyst for artistic reinvention.

Together, these exhibitions reveal the broader purpose behind ArtVoice. They are not isolated events but chapters in an ongoing effort to create lasting international networks where Malaysian artists can exhibit, learn and grow alongside their regional counterparts.
For Stephen Menon, every exhibition is another bridge—connecting artists across cultures, encouraging dialogue, and proving that contemporary Malaysian art belongs confidently on the international stage.
As Malaysia’s contemporary art scene continues to evolve, Stephen’s vision for ArtVoice Gallery remains firmly rooted in supporting local voices. By championing authenticity, encouraging experimentation, and creating opportunities for emerging talent, the gallery is helping to shape a vibrant future for Malaysian art—one exhibition, one artist, and one conversation at a time. – Lin Siu-loong
