Evolution: Lim Siang Jin's journey to art
ArtVoice Gallery presents the first solo in its A Conversation series, featuring Lim Siang Jin's journey to art
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22, 2026: ARTVOICE GALLERY presents Evolution, a solo exhibition by Lim Siang Jin, opening on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 4.30pm. The exhibition is part of the gallery’s A Conversation series and it runs until July 28, 2026. It will be officiated by Lee Khai, chairman of the Penang State Art Gallery.
As the theme suggests, exhibitions under this series will feature discussions with the artists. Lim will talk about his journey to art through sociology, journalism, publishing and communications.
Influenced by sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s reflections on freedom and constraint, Lim will explore how creative expression emerges through the interplay of structure, experience, and imagination. Symbolism, humour and playfulness are recurring elements in his works.
A self-taught artist who has painted since the mid-1970s, Lim took a hiatus from art and only returned to paint during the Covid period.
Evolution draws on his experiences acquired in different spheres: sociology studies in Britain; journalism at The Malay Mail and Malaysian Business; and decades in publishing and communications, including co-founding The Edge Malaysia. He returned fully to art in 2020, bringing these varied experiences into his creative practice. Since then, Lim has exhibited in Malaysia and overseas.
Curated by Stephen Menon, founder of ArtVoice Gallery and the ArtVoice Collective, Evolution brings together four bodies of work to anchor the conversations: Fun with Acrylic Plus, a series of mixed-media paintings; Minimal Man, minimalist black-and white drawings; All Eyes, a 50-piece postcard series centred on the eye motif; and Tenacious in Dissent, Hopeful in Power, an installation developed from Lim’s original concept for the cover of Khoo Boo Teik’s biography of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Founded in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, ArtVoice Gallery serves as a platform for dialogue, experimentation and artistic exchange, supporting both emerging and established artists through exhibitions, workshops and collaborative projects.
